Future Dreams
Frederick Youth Leadership Council is a nonprofit organization whose goals are to promote: patriotism, civic responsibility, leadership skills and history. Currently, the Frederick Public Schools have a 70% of the student population who qualify for free or reduced lunch benefits. Most of these students are left by themselves after school and during the summer. Their parents either don't have the time or the knowledge to help their children to succeed in school. The FYLC does not want to provide a babysitting service but rather a life skills service for the youth between 10-18 years of age.
The FYLC recognizes the need for the youth to learn life skills that used to be taught in the public schools systems. The programs such as Home Ec, Arts and Crafts, Typing, and Shop have now been canceled in order to teach more academics. The FYLC wants to start a center/business whose products would be made by the students and volunteers from the community. These products would range from bakery items, embroidering shirts, quilts, seasonal yard art, refinishing household items garden items, house and garden plants.
Most of the items made by the students will be sold at the store, in booths at local craft fairs, and on the internet. The profits of these items sold would pay for the building rent, building utilities, and supplies.
The FYLC would also offer tutoring and mentoring programs that the youth can sign up for at no cost to them; however, students would be required to sign a contract with the FYLC to volunteer within the community in return for these services. The students would not only learn life skills at the center; but also, work ethics that will make them better citizens in the future. The FYLC would provide a valuable service not only to the community, but to the parents as well. The FYLC would provide a safe, drug free place that the youth from the ages of 10 - 18 can come and learn these skills.
